Yamunanagar: only 13 of 19 health department ambulances on road, many past service life

Yamunanagar's health department runs 13 of its 19 ambulances, many beyond service life, though three new ALS vehicles recently arrived, Amar Ujala reports.

Yamunanagar district in Haryana has 19 health department ambulances, but only 13 are on the road, Amar Ujala reported on 26 October.

According to the report, three ambulances are out of use after road accidents, and the remaining vehicles are in poor condition. The 13 running ambulances are past their service life and have covered up to 1.5 lakh km more than the limit set by the government.

Fleet changes

  • Four ambulances were recently transferred to the district from the National Capital Region; they were also old.
  • Three new Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances arrived recently, the first new vehicles since 2006, with equipment to treat critical patients on the way to hospital.

Call volume and official comment

The health department received 18,442 ambulance calls last year and had logged 4,690 calls this year through August. Dr Sushila Saini, nodal officer for emergency services, said the district needs more ambulances and replacements for old ones, and that old vehicles will be withdrawn as new ones arrive gradually.

Why it matters for ambulance owners and drivers

An ageing fleet with frequent breakdowns places pressure on drivers and crews and shows the demand for well-maintained vehicles.
