Oxygen cylinder blast in private ambulance in Odisha's Mayurbhanj kills patient

A patient died and two people were burnt after an oxygen cylinder exploded in a hired private ambulance outside Udala hospital, Mayurbhanj, police said.

A patient died and two others were injured when an oxygen cylinder exploded inside an ambulance outside the Udala Sub-Divisional Hospital in Mayurbhanj district, Odisha, on Thursday evening (8 October), according to police quoted by PTI.

The patient, who was suffering from a severe blood infection, was being shifted to a hospital in Bhubaneswar. Police said the blast happened when the driver opened the valve of the oxygen cylinder to give the patient oxygen. Officials suspect a sudden leak from the cylinder started the fire.

The explosion blew off the roof of the vehicle. Two people suffered burns while trying to rescue the patient, and family members pulled him out of the burning ambulance. Firefighters brought the blaze under control. Police said the ambulance had been hired from a private operator and a case has been registered.

The exact cause of the cylinder failure had not been established in the reports.
