Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta seeks report on Rs 948 crore 108 ambulance billing

The MP Lokayukta has asked health officials for a report by November 25 on how 108 ambulance bills are verified, after a Congress complaint alleging irregularities.

The Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta has asked the state health department for a factual report on how bills for the 108 ambulance service are verified and paid, according to a report by Amar Ujala dated October 13, 2026. The report has been sought from the Principal Secretary of Public Health and Medical Education and the National Health Mission (NHM) Mission Director, and is due by November 25.

The step follows a complaint by Puneet Tandon, RTI Department president of the state Congress. The complaint alleges that about Rs 948 crore was paid to Jai Ambe Emergency Service under the 108 and Janani Express contract up to 2024. It also says records from Dindori and Shahdol districts show kilometres logged without patient names, mobile numbers or caller details, that an ambulance in Vidisha district logged 500 to 600 km, and that a vehicle registered in another state was operating in Madhya Pradesh.

The Lokayukta had first asked for a report on June 5, but a later communication said it was not received in the stipulated time. On Tuesday the state Congress also demanded an independent audit of the payments at a Bhopal press conference, as relayed by IANS.

These are allegations made by the party. No finding has been made public, and the report does not carry a response from the government or the operator.

Why it matters for ambulance owners and drivers

  • Records that capture patient and caller details and kilometres run may come under closer scrutiny in contract billing.
  • Any outcome could affect how 108 operators are paid and how their contracts are monitored.
