Kanpur keeps 108 ambulances in markets and cancels leave for Diwali, 6-10 November

Kanpur's health department has cancelled staff leave and told 108 ambulances to stay at four market spots from 6 to 10 November for Dhanteras, Diwali and Bhai Dooj.

The Kanpur health department has started emergency preparations for Dhanteras, Diwali and Bhai Dooj, Amar Ujala reported on 4 November 2026. Chief Medical Officer Dr Haridutt Nemi issued the directions, and leave for health workers has been cancelled.

What has been ordered

  • The 108 ambulance service must keep vehicles posted at Naveen Market, Najirabad police station, Brajendra Swaroop Park and the Kotwali area from 6 to 10 November.
  • Hospitals must run 24-hour duty rosters for doctors and staff, keep adequate medicines, and equip burn wards with essential equipment and life-saving drugs.
  • Bed reservations include 20 beds at Ursula Hospital, 10 each at KPM and Kanshiram hospitals, and 5 each at community health centres.

Dr R.K. Gupta, the nodal officer, will ensure rosters for doctors, paramedical staff and ambulances at the control room. At GSVM Medical College, principal Dr Sanjay Kala said backup teams have been formed and all senior residents have been assigned duty. A meeting on Wednesday will decide arrangements for the college's 20-bed burn unit.
