Jharkhand: 108 ambulances out of service in Bundu, Tamar and Sonahatu

Several 108 ambulances in Ranchi's Bundu subdivision are off the road, and AJSU has asked senior health officials to restore services, Prabhat Khabar says.

The 108 ambulance service in Bundu, Tamar and Sonahatu in Ranchi district, Jharkhand, has been affected, according to a Prabhat Khabar report. The AJSU Party has written to the Additional Chief Secretary of the health department and other senior officials, asking for services to be restored immediately.

AJSU's Ranchi district senior vice-president Rajkishore Kushwaha said both 108 ambulances posted at the Bundu subdivisional hospital and trauma centre are currently not in service, and that callers dialling 108 locally have faced difficulty getting a vehicle.

  • Tamar: the hospital earlier had three 108 ambulances, of which only one is running.
  • Sonahatu: the community health centre had two. One has reportedly been out of order for about three months, and the other was sent to Ranchi for repair around a month ago and has not returned.

The party demanded quick repair of the faulty vehicles and assured availability of ambulances for accidents, deliveries and other emergencies. The report notes that ambulance employees' organisations in the state had held a phased agitation in September over service operations and other demands, which was postponed after talks with the government.

Why it matters for ambulance owners and drivers

The report shows that vehicle breakdowns and delayed repairs directly reduce the number of ambulances available to patients in rural areas.
