Bokaro: six of 28 108 ambulances off the road for about five months

Six of Bokaro district's 28 108 ambulances have been in garages for nearly five months, and staff say salaries are not paid regularly, Hindustan reports.

Six of the 28 ambulances in Bokaro district's 108 service have been standing in garages for about five months, leaving 22 vehicles running, according to a Hindustan report.

The report says the 108 service carries more than 250 patients a day free of cost to primary health centres, community health centres and the Sadar hospital. They include pregnant women from remote villages, sick people and road accident victims. Some of the idle ambulances have tyre problems, while others need minor repairs, but the work has not been done for a long time. The report adds that patients have to wait for an ambulance in emergencies.

Sanjay Dasaundhi, ACO of Samman Foundation, said 22 ambulances are operating smoothly and six are out of order. Approval has been given to repair three of them, and efforts will be made to restore them to service soon, he said.

Ambulance staff also complained that salaries are not paid regularly every month, and that payment is often delayed by a month or two, according to the report.

Why it matters for ambulance owners and drivers

  • Idle vehicles and delayed wages are the two problems highlighted in Bokaro's 108 service.
