Bhopal: 108 emergency officer says no ambulance came for four hours after crash

A 108 emergency response officer in Bhopal says ambulances were 'busy' after a road accident; over 10 of 42 vehicles are reportedly out of order.

A 108 emergency response officer (ERO) injured in a road accident in Bhopal says he waited about four hours for help even though he called 108 himself, Bhaskar English reported on 31 October.

According to the report, the accident happened near Abhinav Hall on Nadra Road on 17 October when his motorcycle skidded. He suffered a fractured hand and eye injuries. He said the call lasted around seven minutes, the shift manager and team leader recognised him, but he was told all ambulances in the area were busy and was advised to arrange a private vehicle or call 112. Friends eventually took him to hospital. He has complained to the National Health Mission and alleged that officials pressed him to delete a video he released and withdraw the complaint.

The report says the operating company claims 42 ambulances in Bhopal, but more than 10 are out of order. It adds that the Bhopal in-charge of the service resigned in October after asking the company to maintain 10 ambulances and citing poor arrangements.

Why it matters for ambulance owners and drivers

  • Vehicle maintenance gaps directly reduce the ambulances available on the road.
  • Staff complaints to NHM may lead to scrutiny of fleet upkeep.
